Brooke Valentine Pics & Brooke Valentine Pictures

By Pat Sisson

WHO IS SHE?:
A Houston homegirl who began belting out tunes for her church choir, 19-year-old Brooke Valentine is now the one receiving praise, including props as one of Rolling Stone's 2005 "10 Artists to Watch." Influenced by both schoolyard scuffles and an obsession with radio, Valentine has grown up to become an R&B singer with a story to tell.

WHAT HAS SHE DONE?:
Valentine co-wrote every track on her just-released debut album, Chain Letter, and collaborated with major-league rap stars Big Boi and Lil Jon on the album's first single, the cat-scratching cut "Girlfight." Her career began with a stint in a girl group called BKS (Best Kept Secret). But unlike many teen-pop princesses, Valentine became a dedicated musician and songwriter.

WHY DO WE CARE?:
Kelis may make a mean milkshake, but Brooke Valentine is more than mere dessert. A ravishing, raven-haired musical talent with more curves than a coastal highway, Valentine's a contender in any girl fight. And she has a backside that would satisfy Sir Mix-A-Lot.

Playboy.com: "Girlfight" being your first single, we have to ask about your sparring career. Have you been in any memorable girl fights?

Brooke Valentine: Yes, but not by choice. Stuff like that happens and you can't do anything about that. When a girl steps to you, what are you going to do?

Brooke Valentine's Chain Letter
PB: Are you usually the winner?

BV: I always feel like somebody has to lose, and it's not going to be me. I may be taking something out on you that you don't even understand. You're going to be like "Why did you mess with this girl?"

PB: On another song on Chain Letter, "I Want You Dead," you rattle off methods of revenge, including cutting a hole in a condom. Have you ever done that to a former boyfriend?

BV: Many of the things discussed in that song are very evil. If I haven't done it, I've definitely thought about it. I say thought about it, but almost doing it is just as bad as doing it; if you had the opportunity, you would have done it. If I'm thinking about stabbing you, isn't that enough?

PB: Were you musically inclined at an early age?

BV: I sang at church but I sang more in school. I didn't come from a musical family and never studied it, so I did things my own way. I was going through my own thing listening to the radio. I also had mature tastes. I would hear one of those old love songs and go crazy.
